Call 911 first if anyone is in danger

A child or pet locked in a car is an emergency, especially in Texas heat, where the inside of a car gets dangerous fast. If they're in danger, call 911 first. Don't wait for us.

Tell the 911 operator the make, color and location of the car, and stay with it. Calling first is what gets help moving; talking to someone through the glass does not.

If you're in an unsafe place

Locked out on a roadside, in a dark lot, or somewhere that doesn't feel right? Move yourself first, to a lit store or a gas station with people around. The car can wait; you shouldn't wait beside it. Then call us, and tell dispatch where the car is and where you're waiting.

Text a friend or family member where you are while you wait, and keep your phone charged. If you're alone at night, being findable matters more than being next to the car.

What to have ready

The driver confirms the car is yours before opening it, so have ID in hand. If your wallet is locked inside, tell dispatch when you call: the driver needs ID or another way to show the vehicle is yours.

Say if the engine is running. Locking the keys in with the engine on is an easy way to end up here, and the car keeps running while you stand outside it. Make sure it isn't blocking a lane or a driveway, and if it's in a closed garage, stay out of the exhaust and call 911.
